Daniel Burns Found Guilty By a Jury For

Stealing $160,000 From Cleveland City Schools

Daniel Burns, 54, of Perrysburg, was found guilty by a jury of one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, four counts of tampering with records and one count of theft in office.

Between December 17, 2007 to November 7, 2008, Burns, former Cleveland Schools Chief Operating Officer, and co-defendant, John Briggle, owner of Superior Off-Set Supplies (SOS), conspired to steal approximately $154,400 from the Cleveland Public Schools. Burns approved fraudulent invoices for six large copy machines, including consulting fees, to be provided by SOS. The printers never existed. Briggle's company accepted payment from the Cleveland Public Schools and Briggle gave ½ of the money to Burns in the form of cash payments. The Cleveland Public Schools notified the State Auditor when they found discrepancies in billing.

On June 2, 2010, John Briggle pleaded guilty to four counts of tampering with records and one count of theft. Sentencing is scheduled for July 7, 2010. Briggle faces a maximum of 25 years in prison. Briggle was ordered to pay $154,400 in restitution.

Daniel Burns' sentencing is scheduled for July 14, 2010, at 10:00 am. Burns faces a maximum of 35 years in prison.
